1987 - 1990    M.Sc. (“Diplom”) in Agricultural Sciences, University of Hohenheim, Germany.                   

1990 - 1991    Fulbright fellowship, Graduate study in Plant Genetics and Molecular Biology, University of Florida, USA.

1991 - 1995    Ph.D. in Plant Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Florida, USA. With Don McCarty and Indra Vasil. Topic: ABA signaling during maize seed maturation.

1995 – 1999   Postdoc, University of California, Berkeley, USA. With Peter Quail.

1999 - 2006    Independent group leader, University of Düsseldorf.

7/2003            Habilitation in Plant Biology, University of Düsseldorf.
